“Qualcomm” is an American multinational semiconductor and telecommunications equipment company, founded in 1985 by alumni of Cornel and MIT, the two leading universities in USA.

Qualcomm previously was very much successful in smartphone processor, in both of reputation and revenue, after its Snapdragon “system-on-chip” processor dominating Android becoming de facto Android standard.

The success in smartphone market has overshadowed the company’s history. Qualcomm is a pioneer of cellular wireless system standard development of both CDMA One (IS-95) an CDMA 2000 which later become the standard of early stage 3G wireless communications and the leader in 3G patents securing several patents including WCDMA and HSPA.

Unquestionably, Qualcomm targets to be a pioneer and leader in the wireless system in the coming future when existing 4G and 4G LTE to be replaced by fifth generation new wireless communications system (5G) which use the “super-high frequency”, at the range of 3-30 GHz spectrum of short wave only 100-10 millimeters (that why it’s called Millimeter-Wave) but its data transmission rate is high at multi-gigabit per second, as its high bandwidth is up to 7 GHz.

According to Sherif Hanna, product marketing director of Qualcomm, with this new technology, users can run faster downloading. For example, it takes few seconds for downloading a movie. Speed of internet thus will be no longer a problem in the future.

The issue of ‘speed’, however, is just one part of Qualcomm’s plan as the 5G network needs to be more reliable with least network latency. Users will not feel the difference between running movie files on their devices or web streaming. The network condition also must have not “down” in any case.

The 5G wireless network, in Qualcomm’s perspective, must be capable of complete multi-player online game playing which means ones can keep nothing on the devices because all will be online.

Hanna said the biggest challenge of 5G network concerned by Qualcomm is that it must have capability to support hundred thousands or millions always-on connected devices in any geography.

The 5G, according to Qualcomm, does not only connect everyone, but the entire world together. It thus covers not only multi-million electronic devices, but multi-billion pieces of devices.

Qualcomm has realized that users can always have their new ways or new devices as long as the network quality is improved. On a course of 5G systems and protocols development, the company therefore always finds out what kinds of advantages as a consequence of the new always-on connected world.

In a near future, smartphone may not only primary device for users. The fast and reliable always-on connected capability helps accelerate the artificial intelligence technology development which will allow a variety of devices to be greatly improved such as digital assistants, smart devices, connected home and smart cars.

Users in the new era love to download or run file streaming, but the pattern of downloading may be changed by going for virtual reality (VR) or augmented reality (AR).

It has possibility that the devices will be much simpler as all those high performance and intelligent features will be moved to the Cloud, offering ready-to-use on the 5G network.

The phone in the future will probably just have only a display, battery and processor running simple functions, while the complicated tasks can be used promptly by getting from the Cloud, through the 5G network.

Qualcomm does not only concern these things, but it keeps on developing the products and components to ensure that its technology will be in every single pieces of devices, from digital assistants, AR devices, robot vacuum, smart wireless earphones to smart bulb that can do automatic turn on-off as well as smart microwave oven that knows what to cook and how to cook.

Qualcomm has been working with a wide range of partners, big and small to ensure that devices for the future are compatible with any format of connectivity, low-power connectivity, multi-mode connectivity, Wi-Fi or wireless, multimedia, image processing display, and more.
